Plain-English notes for a private sale. Not legal advice.
No. The licence number stays with the boat. The buyer transfers it within 30 days. The seller should not cancel it.
Transport Canada may ask for more proof of ownership, such as a declaration under oath, before it transfers the licence.
A HIN is 12 characters on the hull. Match it to the bill of sale before you pay. This is a visual check, not a title search.
What to bring to a dockside meetup when you found the boat on a classifieds site. No posting and no scraping.
No. BoatHandoff is independent and not affiliated with Transport Canada. Our bill of sale is built to include the details Transport Canada lists as proof of ownership. You still apply for the licence transfer yourself on canada.ca.
Transport Canada says you must transfer an existing Pleasure Craft Licence into your name within 30 days of the ownership change. The seller shouldn't cancel it, because the licence number stays with the boat for life.
Transport Canada may need more proof, such as a declaration under oath. We flag this during setup. BoatHandoff does not prepare that declaration.
The operator card (PCOC) is separate from the boat's licence. It's obtained through an accredited course provider, and it belongs to the person driving.
The pleasure craft licence is federal. The trailer transfer is local.
